Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins

According a survey conducted by the World Health Organization, venous diseases are among the most common diseases overall. Venous diseases have become a disease of the industrialized world with increasing tendency. In Germany alone, approx. 32 million people suffer from light to moderate venous symptoms. If these remain undetected and additional risk factors come into play, the disease steadily progresses.

Varicose veins should not be taken lightly. In the past, venous diseases were regarded as a trifle far too often.

People with varicose veins are at significantly higher risk of developing thrombosis or a lung embolism.

How do you recognize varicose veins?

Most patients who seek a “venous specialist” suffer from varicose veins. Some patients are more focused on the cosmetic aspects, others on the typical symptoms:

  • Heavy, tired, and swollen legs (particularly in the warmer seasons) are important markers of the disease, as is tension in the legs.
  • At an advanced stage, brown pigment spots are visible in the areas of the ankles or the lower thigh.
  • Rare: cramping in the calves at night, tingling or restlessness in the legs.
